Psuedo-romantic moments???

My ma and I noticed it as well. But then, she read the books years ago when I first got into AG and sort of remembered that. Plus, shes into those bodice ripper novels so her mind works that way anyhow [img]wink.gif[/img]

I, however, am not overly romantic. I am famous for being the girl who would rather watch Animal House than Sleepless in Seatle. But I have always thought the best relationships come from friendship and I really love the closeness between Lissie and Ben. They are simply very trustworthy and loyal friends in the books. And considering their background and the time period, it is easy to imagine them eventually marrying. Its just a nice thought more than anything else. I for one have not found anything in the movie or books to be necessarily 'creepy' or too obvious about romance. It is just easy to see their good friendship developing into something more.

Ugghh, I feel so silly for just writing that out! I need to go watch Animal House now [img]wink.gif[/img]

ETA: Yeah, I have to admit I had a bit of a crush on Ben when I first read those books too. Thats when you know you are a geek; when you have a crush on a book character!! But he is such a good character!! [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Well, said. That basically sums up how I see it in the movie and book.

I did not see romance in a physical sense. I did not see brotherly/sister love either.LOL

Call me a romantic but I did see a beginning of a crush.I had a serious crush with my school bus driver at 10. He was my first crush and I still remember his face (sigh)

Young girls during that era also were thinking of their future husband earlier in life.

They also married earlier than we do now.

Guys ok keep this in mind... in the movie Felicity was 10 years old... who here didn't have some kind of crush on another guy at that age? Of course at the time you might not have known what that crush was. That's what I took it as. Yes, Ben lived at their house and was as close to the family as another son/brother. They were also two birds of a feather. Felicity's feelings for Ben would have been born from a type of envy. She looked up to him and admired him... and she said it in the movie... would rather be him (a boy).

For example... my three year old has the biggest crush on my best friends husband. She doesn't know its what you would call a crush... she just reaally likes him... to the point she only tells him good bye and tells him a hundred times to be careful (its really cute)... and he's the sweetest thing to her in return. Its not the kind of love you'd call children services on... hers is adoration and his is brotherly love/respect.

So why would Ben and Felicity's relationship have been any different? Why could we misinterpret it as a romantic love... simply... When you get down to romantic love... true love is the adoration of a best friend... I think thats what they were trying to portray in the movie. Ben and Lissie had a special relationship, a relationship that as adults could definatly blossom into a fairy tale love, because it is not physical!

Well, thanks for all the responses. I still do not think that there are any 'psuedo-romantic at all. But I guess if Ben's a 'cute' charactor, and girls reading it are identifying with Felicty.... I still think that it's weird. But as they say it takes all types of people (and minds) to make the world go round. [img]smile.gif[/img]

I never noticed anything in the book, but there was a kind of... vibe (for lack of a better worfd) between them in the movie. I don't even think Felicity has a crush on him during the books- she doesn't seem interested in boys yet (which isn't too abnormal, I didn't get my first crush until I was nearly 12). I think there's a possibility for something to happen in the future, though.

BTW, I never thought Ben was cute in the books. The movie, though- that's another story.

in the last book Lissie runs to get Jiggy Nye and when Ben sees him he says something like "If you hurt Felicity I'll kill you!" which can be taken as Ben caring about Lissie in a brother way, but that's not how I took it.

another one I think is the Christmas book, when he takes her to the ball. to me it was romantic.

I definitely think there was a buddding romance there and maybe in like 6 or 7 years, lets say when Lissie is 17 and Ben is like 24? Then they could get married.

oh also if you watch the movie i think they have a real chemistry, sparks between them.
